Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art through her aunt Denise when she was a child. She worked as a night nurse so that she could give her aunt to have the time she needed in her day for the love of writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art could serve to promote activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was born with her family in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was awed by the iconic civil rights demonstration over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby community of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to make a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. When she was still in school, DuVernay began to consider producing in television journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste of one of jurors. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career as a publicist. DuVernay got a job right from college to be an assistant publicist in one of the smaller studios. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Her company launched a range of promotion and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
