Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 at Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for literature and theatre throughout the day. DuVernay liked the film West Side Story, which she showed her.
